RECIPES FROM THE NINETEENTH CENTURY
SANDRA ODDO

PRIMROSE WINE.
Use seven pecks of primroses gathered while thirty pounds of honey boils in fifteen gallons of water until one gallon of liquid boils away. Skim and remove from the fire. Add sixteen lemons, halved, to one gallon. Put the flowers to the remainder and steep overnight. Add lemonade, eight spoonfuls of new yeast. Stir well and let stand for three to four days. Strain, put in cask. Bottle at six months.

NASTURTIUM SANDWICHES.
Use two-thirds blossoms and one-third leaves. Lay on thin slices of buttered bread, white or brown, cover with another slice, and cut into oblong forms. Pile log-cabin fashion on a dainty doily.

SYLLABUB.
In a pitcher holding one and a half pints, dissolve three-fourths of a gill of sugar in half a gill of wine; take it to the cow and milk until the froth reaches the top of the pitcher.
